VW to sell double cab
December 1st, 2009 by Richard Aucock
VW will join the double cab pickup market in September 2010 with the launch of the all new Amarok.
The Brazilian-built model will boast a 1.15-tonne payload, and be sold through Volkswagen Van Centres.
A surprise new entrant into the still-popular double-cab sector, the Amarok looks set to shake things up. The Volkswagen name, combined with the largest load area dimensions in its class, will make a compelling proposition.
It’s wider than any other pickup between the wheelarches, too – so it will swallow a Euro pallet… sideways!
In terms of styling, imagine a double-cab Golf. The looks have a lot of appeal, and exude VW quality.
Under the bonnet comes a choice of two 2.0-litre TDI diesels, producing 163bhp or 122bhp. It’s offered in rear-wheel-drive or 4MOTION all-wheel-drive.
The 4WD model is a full-time all-wheel-drive machine, which is a rarity in this sector. Normally, such vehicles have switchable off-road drive. No word on economy yet, but VW hopes the base version will emit less than 200g/km – earning it class-best status.
Expect both base working versions and posher variants with all the trimmings. Given the anticipated all-round appeal, we wouldn’t be surprised if the new VW Amarok quickly earns itself quite a following in the double cab sector.
