Volvo sells every car…

May 29th, 2009 by Richard Aucock

volvo-drive-300VOLVO has had to rip up its initial sales plans for the scrap scheme incentive, due to overwhelming demand.

‘We were planning to sell 500 cars a year under the scheme,’ said a spokesman.

‘In the first two weeks, we’ve sold 350 – and the orders haven’t stopped…’

Volvo is thus having to redraw its aims for the scrappage scheme. Particularly as the cars it is helping to sell are surprising, too.

‘We’ve sold one of every model in our range under scrappage,’ said our contact. From C30 to XC90, and everything in between.

It’s not just the cheaper, more affordable end of the range that is winning. This, apparently, is because the typical Volvo customer tends to keep hold of their cars for longer.

The models last so well, owners work on lifecycles of decades rather than years.

Scrappage, rather than facilitating a sale, has simply served to remind them that new cars are out there.

It’s a sales incentive that has got curious people into showrooms – and, subsequently, encouraged a sale. Here’s hoping it continues…
