Vauxhall 30% job loss?
September 22nd, 2009 by Richard Aucock
GERMAN newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has seen leaked documents, detailing Vauxhall job cuts.
According to the paper, 30 percent of Vauxhall’s two-plant UK workforce is to be cut.
This equates to around 1400 jobs – with the biggest cuts to occur at the firm’s Luton van-making plant.
Overall, new owners Magna are going to cut 11,000 jobs across Europe. However, not all countries will see a similar scale of redundancies.
There will be fewer jobs lost in Germany. In contrast, the firm’s car production plant in Belgium is to be shut down entirely, resulting in even more job losses than in the UK.
Currently, the plant in Antwerp makes current-generation versions of the Vauxhall Astra. Cheshire’s Ellesmere Port plant has become the first factory in the world to start making the new model, launched next month.
Full details are yet to be confirmed, and will be revealed by Magna in the coming week. However, if the German newspaper’s source is to be believed, the UK could be in for a big hit following the takeover of the firm…
