Vauxhall car jobs safe

November 26th, 2009 by Richard Aucock

vauxhall-e28093-no-uk-redundanciesVAUXHALL Opel is undergoing a consultation process – but Ellesmere Port is already assured of NO redundancies.

The great news for UK car workers emerged after CEO Nick Reilly summarised discussions so far yesterday.

Plans for Ellesmere Port are, instead, to UP car production, by moving to 3-shift operations in 2011.

This will see the new Astra Sports Tourer estate model introduced. All staff will need to be utilised for the 3rd shift, said Reilly.

‘Plant and trade union senior leadership will now work together to develop the details of the plan in order to support the future strategy for Ellesmere Port,’ he added.

This encouraging news for the UK comes after the drama of GM deciding not to take up the offer from Magna to buy the group.

Overcapacity does still exist though; it is expected the plant in Belgium, which makes the old-shape Astra, will be closed instead.

There are also expected to be a degree of redundancies at the Luton van-producing plant, but these are currently unconfirmed. More will become clear as the consultation process continues.
