Used car official label
November 2nd, 2009 by Richard Aucock
USED cars will now display a customer-friendly fuel economy mpg label, with the launch of a new initiative.
Minister for transport Sadiq Khan MP unveiled the scheme, to which 1500 car dealers have already signed up.
Mirroring the official new car eco label used by over 9 in 10 dealers, it brings colour-coded used car information on key areas for secondhand car buyers:
• Fuel consumption
• CO2
• Running costs
• Environmental performance
Car dealers can label cars dating back to 1 March 2001, by using information from VCA records.
HPI is the first data provider to roll out easy to use forms which car dealers can display on used cars. Such detailed used car running cost information is the reason why RMI director Sue Robinson is so supportive of the scheme.
Although it is still voluntary, ‘the RMI is urging all used car dealers to sign up to this scheme,’ she said.
Sadiq Khan MP said ‘I hope as many dealers as possible will participate ,and I encourage used car buyers to look out for the label when they consider what to buy.’
It will help support the trends of YOUR customers: AA President Edmund King revealed that ‘ 62 percent of our AA/Populus panel say when buying another car they would choose a more fuel efficient one.’
Until now, car buyers have been kept in the dark on used car info. ‘91 percent supported a fuel economy label on used cars, so with this launch, they will be better informed about future running costs.’
Through their approved used car schemes,’ added SMMT chief exec Paul Everitt, ‘vehicle manufacturers account for a significant proportion of used car sales, so have an important role to play in supporting this initiative.’
