Toyota recall comes to EU

January 28th, 2010 by Richard Aucock

toyota-recall-stretches-to-europeTOYOTA’S massive US recall over sticking accelerators is coming to Europe which may mean big work for dealers.

The firm has today announced the recall – but has yet to disclose the exact models affected.

It is ‘still under investigation’ the models and exact number of affected vehicles.

Toyota car owners will be directly contacted, says the firm, following the usual car recall protocol. Dealers will concurrently be advised on the process of remedial work.

It is a blow for Toyota, which has been severely hit in the US by the negative publicity surrounding the issue. The firm is even suffering the indignity of rival brands offering specific incentives for Toyota and Lexus customers ‘worried’ about the issue.

The recall is centered around the risk of the accelerator pedal either returning slowly to the idle position or – more alarmingly – sticking in a depressed position. It’s caused by progressive wear increasing friction in the pedal.

‘Whilst this condition is rare,’ said Toyota, ‘we advise customers who have concerns to contact Toyota GB Customer Relations for assistance ahead of the recall instructions being issued.’

Toyota car dealers, we’re sure, will have already been primed on the best response. Do please share your views with us on the issue in the meantime.
