TOYOTA has held the first meeting of its new Global Quality committee to set the agenda for future work.

TMC president Akio Toyoda chaired the meeting, which will investigate the cause of quality problems such as the recent spate of recalls.

The firm says quality will be approached from the customer’s point of view in the future – with transparency and global communication central to the forward agenda.

‘With today’s meeting of the global committee as the start,’ said a statement, ‘the committee and the regional quality committees will continue to spearhead comprehensive improvements to the company’s operations, and promote the strengthening of global quality improvement activities.

‘TMC’s global committee will investigate the causes of quality problems, including those that necessitate recalls, and reexamine the factors that affect quality in every phase of design work, manufacturing, marketing and service.’

There was plenty to discuss at the first meeting, with lots of outcomes already. Toyota has said it will, along with various other initiatives:

•    Structure an optimal and prompt recall decision-making process both globally and locally
•    Establish a European CF (customer first) training centre by July 2010 to cultivate quality assurance professionals
•    Incorporate—globally—a brake override system (BOS) into new production models, automatically reduce engine power when the brake and accelerator pedals are applied simultaneously
•    Establish 7 quality offices in Europe and improve online information gathering systems
