Swine flu alert for dealers
July 27th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
CAR dealers are being warned to ensure they have a swine flu action plan in place, to cope with any pandemic.
The RMIF says that dealers with particular in-house specialisms could be severely hit if there is any outbreak.
Sue Robinson, RMIF director, said: ‘Retail motor sector staff are highly skilled, and most dealers and garages field small, highly specialised teams.’
Any absences from swine flu-struck workers ‘could have implications for the short-term viability of businesses in late summer and early autumn.
‘Therefore, it is imperative for employers to put measures in place to keep their businesses running efficiently despite staff absences.’
She’s drawn up a three-point action plan that car dealers should consider:
- Pinpoint staff with key skills, who can provide emergency cover
- Train up staff doing unfamiliar jobs due to absences
- Consider medical scheme which offer fast access to cures such as Tamiflu
That’s not all. Further implications from a big outbreak issues around Working Time Regulations, due to remaining staff working longer hours.
Car dealers may have to get them to sign an opt-out agreement.
Personnel should also be trained in dealing with both flu-struck employees, and fellow workers who have been in contact with them.
