SsangYong miracle man
June 24th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
SSANGYONG UK employee Adrian Ryan has walked again – just days after breaking his back.
A horror cycling accident saw Ryan land on his head. He soon discovered that he could not move his legs.
What’s more, he was left undiscovered for more than an hour; Ryan could simply shout for help until a passer-by discovered him, and he was airlifted to hospital.
The worst was revealed during an eight hour operation; he had five broken vertebrae – and one of them had split into three and was pressing on his spinal cord.
Instant fear flashed up, he told the Nottingham Evening Post; that he’d be confided to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Ryan confirmed the doctor’s worst initial fears. ‘It was thought I would not be able to stand up or walk again.’
Yet, incredibly, just two weeks later, he was taking his first steps again! And it’s all thanks to him being ‘exceptionally fortunate’.
Paul Smith, of the Spinal Injuries Association, revealed that ‘had the fractured vertebrae fallen differently, he could have been completely paralysed.
‘The best surgeon in the world is not going to be able to repair a severed spinal cord.’
Ryan’s recovery is now continuing, with the best wishes and support of all at Koelliker UK.
‘It is nothing short of a miracle to have that much bone damage and so little after-effects,’ he said.
‘I feel really lucky.’
