SMMT election Manifesto
April 21st, 2010 by Richard Aucock
SMMT chief Paul Everitt has called upon support for the UK car industry from any new UK Government.
To help politicians make the right decisions, the trade body has thus launched its own manifesto.
This will, he says, ensure many of the successful schemes that have already been running will continue to strengthen economic recovery.
It is a great opportunity, he said. ‘The next government must commit to continuing the work of the Automotive Council and actively support measures to improve skills, encourage more investment in R&D and re-build business and consumer confidence.’
The SMMT’s Manifesto includes a range of suggestions and proposals for the next UK Government. These include:
• Champion automotive manufacturing in the UK
• Create a transformed business environment
• Support research, design and development
• Close the skills gap
SMMT experts also list the many opportunities presented in each area – such as, R&D. ‘The automotive sector invests over £1 billion in R&D each year in the UK,’ says the body, ‘and is the largest investor in R&D in Europe.’
Attention directed to the car industry will be warranted, said Everitt. ‘The automotive sector is a vital part of the UK economy with a turnover of £52 billion, exports amounting to 10 percent of the UK total and supporting over 800,000 jobs and is at the forefront of low-carbon technology.’
Here’s hoping the next Government listens to many of the fine proposals put forward by the SMMT.
