Showroom tax turn off
March 24th, 2010 by Richard Aucock
MOTORISTS are going to be put off buying a new car because of the new showroom tax says a survey.
93 percent of those polled by Motorpoint will think twice about buying a new car.
It’s set to come into force on April1 – adding up to £515 to the first-year VED road tax of a new car. Makers will add this to the on-the-road price, with thirsty motors the worst hit.
MD David Shelton said ‘the ‘Showroom Tax’ is clearly going to have a negative effective on consumer confidence over the coming weeks and months as drivers think twice about buying new.
‘Therefore, I would urge buyers to consider nearly new as an alternative as they will enjoy all the benefits of a new car – just without the extra costs associated with getting their vehicle onto the road.’
The firm also expects to see sales of nearly new models rise sharply from April onwards as motorists look to avoid paying the surcharge…
