Self regulation Codes plea
December 2nd, 2009 by Richard Aucock
SELF regulation must be accepted by car garages if it is to avoid costly legislation laid down by Government.
This was the theme of discussions in Parliament yesterday, as the self-regulation debate was put before the All-Party Parliamentary Motor Group.
Motor Codes director (and Car Dealer Magazine columnist) Chris Mason made a compelling case for self regulation as opposed to official legislation. This, he said, would provide a minimum service standard that would benefit customers.
‘We are determined to build on the early success of the Service and Repair Code, working collaboratively with industry to raise and maintain standards across the sector through effective self-regulation,’ he said.
It’s ‘a hallmark of quality that customers can rely on’.
That’s why he pleaded for Government to support it. How? By making it a requirement of any garage applying to be an MOT testing station. This would avoid the costly official regulation that car garages fear.
‘As a Motor Codes garage, each subscriber plays a part in the regulation of the industry – whereas if Government is forced to introduce legislation that imposes standards, the rules will be out of the sector’s control and will certainly cost them significantly more to comply.’
So get on board with your support, or it could cost you in more ways than one!
