Scrappage time almost up

March 10th, 2010 by Richard Aucock

scrappage-time-almost-upSCRAPPAGE deals are running dry for many car makers with some insiders predicting they will close order books today.

Many big brands are down to their final initial allocations under the Government’s official Exit Strategy scheme.

Unless and until further allocations are dished out for the the last dregs of the scrappage fund pot, the much-heralded scrappage scheme boost will have run its course.

Toyota is one maker who is keen to promote time is running out: it is using a ‘countdown ticker’ of remaining scrappage cars on its website. Yesterday, this showed more than 300 cars.

This morning, it is down to just over 200.

Earlier in the week, the SMMT announced that scrappage registrations had topped 330,000 to the end of February. As scrappage orders are counted separately to final deliveries, it means the 400,000-car total is almost certainly almost up.

The effects of this have been immediate. ‘There has been a significant late rush for scrappage orders and stock is depleted on all popular mdoels and engines as a result,’ said Jo Eveleigh of Dealdrivers.co.uk.

‘Lead times are lengthening on most cars for factory order.’

How are the scrappage order books at your car dealer? Let us know who you are and whether scrappage orders are now closed to you.
