Scrappage snares 21%
SCRAPPAGE sales accounted for 21 percent of all new car sales in July, come latest figures from the SMMT.
33,026 cars were sold under the new car scrap scheme, with the vast majority of these being private sales.
It marks the first growth in new car sales in well over a year.
So far, the SMMT claims there have been 84,361 new car registrations under the scheme – meaning approaching a third of the total scrappage allowance is already on UK roads.
What’s more, 499 vans were registered under scrappage – 3.6 percent of the overall van market.
‘The scrappage scheme has contributed to the first increase in new car registrations since April last year,’ said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.
‘Smaller, lower-CO2 emitting cars are taking the lion’s share of registrations, which will have a positive impact in reducing emissions, as well as boosting the UK motor industry.’
