Scrappage sales OUT
October 6th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
SCRAPPAGE sales accounted for 21 percent of September new car registrations, says the SMMT.
This means 77,316 scrappage cars were sold.
It also means the total amount of cars registered under the scheme now stands at 178,278. Of course, this doesn’t include cars already on order, too – they take the figure far higher.
‘The scrappage scheme is providing the foundation for recovery in new car registrations,’ said SMMT chief Paul Everitt, ‘but there is still a long way to go.’
Extending it ‘will allow for a further 100,000 vehicles and the new criteria will open the scheme up to more consumers, allowing time for the market to stabilise as the economy gradually improves.’
Also revealed was the scrappage sales top 10 – with Hyundai snapping at the heels of market leader Ford! Toyota and Fiat Group also fared well.
