Scrappage surprise
August 6th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
DEALDRIVERS.CO.UK says that the small car market is currently taking over 7 in 10 scrappage sales.
But it’s the rest of the key scrappage sellers that prove even more intriguing!
Director from the car broker firm, Jo Eveleigh, told Car Dealer Magazine that there were some cars that were, unsurprisingly, in particular demand:
• Ford Fiesta
• Toyota Aygo
• Citroen C1
• Renault Clio
The one exception was a lot of interest in the Volkswagen Golf – ‘but this was predominately for the GTI…’
Otherwise, continued Eveleigh, previous key strong sellers have not performed as well. ‘The mid-ranges – cars such as the Audi A3 and Ford Focus, seem to have lost out, from figures we’ve seen.’
Instead, the remaining 29 percent of scrappage interest has been for far higher end motors! ‘The mix here has been surprising, as they were all the much heavier end of the model spectrum.
‘We’re talking well-specified luxury versions,’ – models such as:
• Ford Kuga
• Ford Galaxy
• Ford S-Max
• Volkswagen Scirocco
• Volkswagen Passat
• Volkswagen Tiguan
• Audi A5
• Volvo XC90
Eveleigh has spotted yet another interesting trend, too. ‘Many customers have really seen it as an opportunity to go for the ‘dream’ car, with lots of factory options being added – items such as leather and audio upgrades.’
Looking forward, Eveleigh reckons things are positive. ‘The key is maintaining access to good stock levels, which fortunately we can do on most brands.
‘Nobody wants to risk a long leadtime on the scrappage scheme…’
