Scrappage sales league

September 7th, 2009 by Richard Aucock

scrappage-sales-league-so-farWHICH car maker is leading the scrappage sales league so far? The third best-selling maker in the UK, that’s who.

Hyundai has sold 12.747 scrappage cars, reveal figures from Government body the BIS – more even than Ford, which has sold 12,228.

It’s a result that shows the scale of how Hyundai has embraced scrappage. The maker has seen the opportunity and gone all out to grab market share – with stunning results.

Toyota is a surprise maker in third, and Fiat Group an honourable, deserved fourth.

Kia’s sister company comes in fifth – it’s over 5000 units behind Hyundai… but is still well in front of Vauxhall! The second-best seller in the UK is only sixth for scrappage sales.

Though some may say this is actually good, as the bulk of Vauxhall’s sales will be more profitable non-scrappage sales… discuss!

The rest of the top 10 creates no surprises, apart from the lack of Renault there. The French firm has really cut back on production, to offset the recession – like Vauxhall, does this mean its sales are much more profitable, or is it missing out on a golden opportunity?

At the bottom of the scrappage sales league, SsangYong keeps on gaining market share – yet it’s sold just 2 cars under scrappage. Incredibly, Porsche’s done 11 scrappage motors, and posh Lexus has shifted 20. Jaguar? 52 new models have been registered for scrappage motors.

And reborn MG? 22 TFs have made way for scrappage motors. The irony here, of course, being that the base design of the MG is itself old enough to qualify for a scrappage discount…
