Scrappage nears end
May 10th, 2010 by Richard Aucock
SCRAPPAGE scheme registrations are almost complete as the SMMT announces its latest update.
Total registrations are now 395,500 – tantalisingly close to the 400,000 official total.
Cars make up 388,540 of these, with 6959 LCVs also being registered through the scrappage initiative. This follows the ending of the scheme in March.
SMMT chief exec Paul Everitt said: ‘The scheme helped support our economy and played a vital role in providing a much-needed boost to the UK automotive industry.’ Now it is over though, he warned, the effects of its absence could start to be felt.
‘Our latest registration forecasts suggest the 2010 market will perform better than expected, but will appear subdued compared to the peaks achieved during the scrappage scheme.’
It is hoped the positive environmental bonus of the scheme will continue, though. Average scrappage scheme CO2 emissions were 132.9g/km, more than 27 percent below the scrappage car’s figure.
That’s also nearly 10 percent below the overall national new car average.
