Scrap: Genuine extension
September 29th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
SCRAPPAGE hasn’t just received a funds boost – the scope of the scheme has also been extended by Lord Mandelson.
Now, owners of cars registered on or before 29 February 2000 – V-reg – will be eligible for the scheme.
This six-month extension of the age limit reflects the longer period the scheme is to run: if funds remain, the scheme will be in place until February 2010.
What’s more, the age limit for scrappage vans has been bought forward by two years – now, 8 year old vans will be able to take part in the scheme. This is to give the ailing commercial vehicle sector a big boost.
For van owners, it means 2002 Y-reg or 2002/51 cars registered before 28 February 2002 can be traded in for scrappage scrappage-funded vans.
Current van sales are down big in the UK; the Government hopes firms will be given a lift by the more generous scheme. It will also help car makers who produce vans in the UK, such as Vauxhall at Luton and Ford at Southampton.
Lord Mandelson is still keen to tie in the £100m funds boost in with other industry aid. ‘This is not a blank cheque to the auto manufacturers,’ he said, ‘but recognition that there is still a short term challenge to boost demand and confidence in the sector.’
The Government also underlined the special scrappage section on the BERR website, which carries full information of the latest news about the scheme.
