SCRAPPAGE is all in the news at the moment – but, a few weeks in, how is it working for car dealers?

A brand given a massive boost by the scheme has been Hyundai. Andy Maddock, DP at York’s Hatfields Hyundai, fully agrees.
‘The response has been so significant, we have tripled our sales during May.’
Indeed, he goes further. ‘The jump in sales is unquestionably down to the new programme, rather than being a general rise in retail demand.’
Proof positive that scrappage IS getting car buyers into car dealer showrooms.
So what sort of people is Maddock seeing? Crucially, he says, many new customers, ‘including some who say they would not necessarily have considered a new car before the scheme was launched.
‘A large proportion of incoming scrappage part-exchanges seem to be cars which have been used regularly, but which owners have been reluctant to change.
So what made them take the plunge? ‘The transparency of the scheme,’ he says.
Surprisingly, it’s not the cheaper cars that are in highest demand, but the family hatchback i30, says Maddock.
This is because that car offers the biggest saving against new retail price. Which is another interesting trend – car buyers are not necessarily going for the cheapest car, but the biggest bargain car.
