Scrap scheme condemned
May 12th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
RISING repair costs and the closure of aftermarket repair businesses will be side effects of the scrappage scheme.
The World Engine Remanufacturing Council has thus condemned the scheme as a ‘serious blow’.
As remanufacturing competes directly with the aftermarket business at dealership level, says the body, the result will help car makers at the expense of third party suppliers.
‘It is a fact that there are more people working in the automotive aftermarket and remanufacturing sectors (such as, repairing older vehicles) in the UK than there are building new cars,’ said Brian Ludford of the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers.
There is no doubting which side his loyalties lie. ‘This latest move threatens all of them, which is something the car companies will consider a very welcome by-product.’
An interesting counterpoint…
