SCRAP: Japan gets scrap
April 14th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
JAPAN is the latest nation to get a new car scrappage scheme, as it seeks to boost its crunched car industry.
Autobeat Europe reports that £2.4 billion is being invested, to encourage car buyers to scrap cars at least 13 years old.
They will get just under £1700 off the purchase of a new car – or £850 if they buy a green, affordable ‘minicar’.
It’s intended to stem a drop in demand, that some analysts say could see nearly 9 percent fewer cars sold in the coming financial year.
This comes on top of big falls already recorded in Japan.
It is on top of separate tax breaks for eco cars already introduced by the Government – and could boost sales by 1 million new cars.
Yet another such development on the international stage only furthers the cause of car makers for such a scheme in the UK…
