SCRAP: UK to make 12?
April 8th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
SO far, 11 EU countries have launched ‘fleet renewal’ schemes – widely called new car scrappage schemes.
The results have been startling.
German new car registrations have improved by 30 percent – and new car orders rose by a staggering 70 percent!
Findings announced by the European automobile manufacturers association ACEA says that this could drive up 2009 sales there by 300,000 cars.
It’s not just Germany, either. 20 per cent of cars sold in France in January came under the country’s scrappage scheme.
In Portugal, 16 per cent of all cars bought in 2008 were done so under a new car scrap scheme.
The introduction of a scheme in the UK, says the association, would help soften the impact of the recession for car dealers.
It would help spread the market decline over several years, and is seen as a positive step to help the industry.
Will the UK make it the full EU dozen in the Budget on 22 April? So far, the signs say yes…
