Mail’s ‘nail in coffin’

October 30th, 2009 by Richard Aucock

postal-strike-nail-in-coffin-predictionWARRANTY Direct was a firm so badly hit by the last postal strike two years ago, it made a management vow.

To remove its reliance on the postal system.

It successfully did this, with a new system that delivers more than 70 percent of quotes and policy documents via email. Settling claims with garages is now also digitally based.

This means Royal Mail is not getting business from the 12,000 letters it used to post. And it’s why the firm’s MD says that, with the latest set of strikes, the Royal Mail has ‘sealed its own fate in the eyes of many businesses’.

‘Back in 2007, we grew weary of having to battle against the Royal Mail’s internal politicking and scrapped our traditional method of posting documents.

‘It not only instantly saved us hundreds of thousands of pounds, but we are now seeing that it means we are no longer beholden to the whims of the Royal Mail.

‘We have hardly noticed the recent strikes, and I’ve heard of no complaints from our customers or suppliers. It appears the service has finally shot itself in the foot for good.’

Interesting views from the Reading warranty firm. Will the latest round of strikes see your business do the same?
