Oil be: 5m running low
April 27th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
FIVE million UK car drivers admit to never checking their oil level, risking repair bills running into thousands.
That’s according to Comma oil, which came up with the figures after a survey revealed the shock findings.
What’s more, over half of the car drivers surveyed said they either don’t have the time, or simply forget, to check their oil level.
1 in 20 owners don’t even know what a dipstick is.
This has led the aftersales provider to set up National Oil Check Week. Running between 15-19 June, the aim is to boost the profile of aftersales with car owners, and show how car dealers can help save them thousands.
Comma’s Mike Bewsey said: ‘When we’re all watching the pennies, it’s daft that we don’t take better care of one of the most expensive items we own, and which we rely so much.’
He said that an average engine repair bill caused by running low on oil tops £1400.
‘If you’re going to risk extending the time between services, you need to at least do the basic things, like making sure your oil is topped up.’
Car dealers can certainly look forward to some high-profile aftersales marketing from National Oil Check Week. Lewis Hamilton’s oil supplier, Mobil 1, says it will support the campaign, as will Halfords and, of course Comma Oil.
Now’s the time to be gearing up your own aftersales department, to take advantage of the extra sales leads generated!
