Nissan still top in UK
January 28th, 2010 by Richard Aucock
NISSAN has again claimed the crown of the biggest car producer in the UK thanks to the Sunderland plant.
Last year, it built 338,150 new Nissans – that’s more than a third of the 999,460 cars produced in the UK last year.
It marks the 12th year running that Nissan has been the biggest car producer in the UK.
The production figures included almost 200,000 Qashqais, with the rest of the split made up of Notes and Micras. Indeed, production of these cars was actually upped during 2009, to meet scrappage-inspired demand.
This year will remain a challenge, said Nissan senior vice president Trevor Mann, but the hard-working Sunderland workforce deserves credit for achievements that have helped it to a position of strength.
‘2010 is going to be another tough year for car makers, and the industry is predicting a cooling in demand in general terms. However, Sunderland has worked hard to win the right models for the market and we are benefitting from that.’
Even better news comes in August for Sunderland, when it starts production of Nissan’s brand new supermini crossover model, the Juke. This vehicle is, when it goes on sale in the autumn, expected to further boost Sunderland’s strength.
