Nissan secures UK jobs
July 20th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
NISSAN’S £380m European Investment Bank loan is to create 350 new jobs at the Sunderland factory.
The jobs will be to produce batteries for Nissan’s future range of electric cars.
This means the very real possibility of producing volume electric cars at the huge UK plant – securing its long-term future.
The European loan was announced back in April, for both Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover. JLR is still wrangling over the details – much to the frustration of Lord Mandelson.
He is thus buoyed to be visiting Sunderland today – to speak, says the BBC, about creating a low carbon green revolution in the area.
Mandelson’s aim is for the UK to be Europe’s leading manufacturer of electric vehicles.
With today’s announcement from Nissan, plus last week’s pledge from Toyota, his plans may be bearing fruit…
