Nissan jobs boost
May 11th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
SCRAPPAGE has marked its first positive boost for the UK car industry – thanks to Nissan.
The Japanese maker is upping production by 14,000 cars at its Sunderland plant – creating 150 extra jobs.
Nissan’s making the move to meet an expected increase in demand for the Micra, Note and Qashqai; all models it’s selling under an enhanced new car scrap scheme incentive.
The company is extending the trade-in age for old cars to 8 years or older… so long as the new Nisan is built in the UK.
Nissan’s Trevor Mann said ‘this short term spike in demand, fuelled by a number of scrappage schemes introduced across Europe, is clearly a very welcome boost to business, during what is a highly challenging period for all car makers.’
Concrete proof that the scrap scheme incentive IS working…
We will be watching rival makers with UK plants in the coming weeks, such as Honda, Toyota, MINI and Vauxhall, to see if they too take on extra staff to meet expected demand.
