New car sales surprises
November 5th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
NEW car sales rises are being driven by small cars, reveals latest registration data from the SMMT.
Supermini sales are up 47.9 percent in October – and city car sales are up an incredible 200 percent!
This has seen 7 out of the top 10 best-sellers being superminis. It also means there are some surprises. The Hyundai 10 comes in 8th, MINI is 9th – and Fiat’s 500 makes a top-10 best-seller debut.
The Ford Fiesta continues its reign as the overall best seller. It has now held the top slot for 8 months in 2009.
Further good news for car dealers is a DOUBLING of more profitable private retail registrations. Again, the scrappage scheme really has encouraged people into showrooms, with figures showing an 86 percent increase on 2009.
As for winning makers, Hyundai continues to lead the field for market share increases, with a stunning 286 percent rise on 2008.
Fellow Korean maker has posted a 156 percent increase, while Fiat is up 117 percent.
