Hybrid death threat
CAR dealer mechanics are at risk of injury or death if they fail to follow procedures when servicing hybrid cars.
The petrol-electric models are packed with batteries, which must be completely isolated, warns the RMIF.
Cars must also sit for an hour before work can commence. Otherwise, technicians face a 500-volt shock.
It is an increasing concern too, warns the RMIF’s Mike Owen. ‘Six percent of newly registered vehicles are hybrids, and this is growing.
‘Repairers must train and equip their technicians as they are sure to encounter one of these vehicles in the future.’
To further mitigate against death or injury risk, and the cost of subsequent legal claims, car dealers should also instruct technicians not to use scan tools or oscilloscopes on the motors.
‘Most of these vehicles use the orange code to signify high tension components, and ultimate care must be used before working on any such component,’ said Owen.
‘This includes the use of gloves, footwear and insulated matting.’
A new, unexpected risk for car dealers and technicians alike!
