Mandy Council success

LORD Mandelson has pronounced the first Automotive Council meeting last week to be a significant success.
The UK car industry will strengthen its approach to future eco motoring as a consequence, he explained.
As Car Dealer Magazine earlier reported, the Council is already having an effect, following the announcement of a £19 million competition.
‘This investment is another important step for the UK towards a low carbon economy,’ said Mandelson.
‘The Government is committed to targeting areas where there is potential to build on existing capabilities and deliver global competitive advantage and economic benefit for the UK.’
There’s a real opportunity for the UK here, reckons transport secretary Andrew Adonis. ‘The UK can be a world leader in low carbon transport which is why the Government has already committed around £400 million of support to encourage development and uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles.’
Green cars are coming
Such eco cars are going to become a familiar sight in car dealers within the next 5 years, he reckoned.
‘The only sustainable option to safeguard the industry’s future and meet our environmental obligations is a transformation to low carbon technologies and this investment marks a significant step towards this goal.’
At the same meeting, the business secretary announced that Vauxhall boss Bill Parfitt will chair the important Supply Chain council. That’s the body which will support the work of the Automotive Council.
