June winners and losers
July 13th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
NEW car sales charts for June show some big winners and losers, within a market down 15 percent.
Most eye-opening revelation is that both Hyundai and Kia have chalked up massive sales increases! Hyundai is up a mighty 91 percent, with Kia also booming through a 60 percent rise.
Even bigger gains are recorded from Cadillac (633 percent) and SsangYong (136 percent), but these numbers were from lower sales volumes.
Similarly, Alfa is up 30 percent, but that equates to a total of 935 cars, instead of 2008’s 714 cars. Chevrolet, though, is also up 30 percent, after selling 2403 cars in June 2009.
Also, could an indicator that the recession is nearing its end be a rise in Porsche sales of 17 percent?
Celebrations for these brands contrasted with gloomy faces elsewhere. Chrysler saw a huge decline of 72 percent in new car registrations.
Renault was not far behind, with a 71 percent decline.
There was also woe for Saab (-65 percent), Bentley (-40 percent), Subaru (-38 percent), plus both Mazda and Vauxhall (both -34 percent).
The Vauxhall decline was in stark contrast to a sales increase at Ford, of 4 percent. This means the Blue Oval commands just under 17 percent market share in the UK.
Vauxhall is down to just under 12 percent.
Back in 2008, the placings were reversed – Vauxhall had 15 percent, with Ford on 13 percent.
Renault was down to 18th in the June 2009 market share rankings. Significantly, Skoda, Suzuki, Kia, Fiat, Citroen and Hyundai all outscored it.
It seems the big shake-up in the UK car market is continuing apace…
