Infiniti gets all-new diesel
February 25th, 2010 by Richard Aucock
INFINITI will this summer get a much-needed new engine when diesel power arrives for the first time.
The 3.0-litre V6 turbo engine has been developed by Renault and Nissan, and will produce 234bhp.
It will initially be offered in both the EX and FX crossover models. However, it is also coming to the all important Infiniti M saloon, a rival to the Audi A6.
This car is due to arrive for UK sale in 2010.
Diesel is a vital eco and CO2 boost to the Infiniti line. The EX diesel will emit 224g/km, helping it dip below the all important 225g/km CO2 barrier. The FX will also become more economical, and emit 240g/km CO2,
Diesel represents the bulk of sales in Europe, admits Infiniti. This all-new engine has been in development since 2005, and Infiniti says it wholeheartedly delivers a design goal of high refinement levels.
It’s not quite identical to units in Renaults and Nissans, though. Infiniti’s version will have a different cylinder block, new crankshaft, a revised intake manifold and fuel injection system, plus changes to the turbocharger.
The engine also has a different state of tune for more responsive performance.
More details will, says Infiniti, follow in the coming months. It’s worth noting that while rival brand Lexus has hybrids, it as yet does not sell a comparable diesel variant…
