Hyundai scrappage share
July 21st, 2009 by Richard Aucock
HYUNDAI has this weekend recorded its 10,000 scrappage new car order – for a single model alone!
The 10,000th scrappage i10 model was sold by a UK car dealer on Saturday.
This brings Hyundai’s total scrappage sales to a staggering 17,200 – giving it, according to SMMT estimates, nearly a 15 percent share of the scrappage market.
That i10s form 10,000 units of the 120,000 scrappage volume to date shows what a hit the scheme has been for Hyundai.
Indeed, the total is nearly twice that of Ford’s best-selling scrappage model, the Fiesta.
We intentionally mention Ford here. That’s because a spat between Hyundai and Ford has also been resolved.
The blue oval last week claimed in communications that Ford ‘leads the way with 14,000 orders to date.’
It has now confirmed that this statement referred to performance ‘across all vehicle lines. Ford feels its sales results in all vehicle sectors, such as the Kuga SUV and S-Max MPV, warrants the claim.
However, ‘purely on volume,’ said a spokesman, ‘Hyundai’s ahead.’
