Hyundai’s ‘scrap scheme’
January 25th, 2010 by Richard Aucock
SCRAPPAGE has helped Hyundai to such big UK gains that the maker intends to continue success.
The firm today thus launches TWO post-scrappage schemes – Trade & Upgrade and Happy Returns.
Trade & Upgrade is a generous scrappage-type scheme, that will give owners of cars aged between 7 and 10 years old the same £2000 discount gained from the Government scrappage scheme.
Hyundai says 6.4 million UK car owners will be eligible.
But it is the Happy Returns scheme that has really staggered Car Dealer Magazine. This allows existing Hyundai scrappage customers to switch into a ‘10’ registration car in March – for as little as £499.
Yes, really!
Hyundai is indeed guaranteeing the buy-back of last years i10, i20 and i30 models, in exchange for a brand new model – and it is all made possible, says the firm, through the excellent retained values of the latest ‘i’ range of cars.
The swap can be made any time up until the car’s 1st anniversary, saving the customer the cost of the first service and tax disc renewal, while also ensuring they once again benefit from a full 5-year new car warranty.
Hyundai adds that customers are not tied to swapping into the same model – they can move up and down the range if they so wish. The firm has even revealed the simple pricing structure:
• i10 £499
• i20 £599
• i30 £749
Factor in service and road tax costs, says the firm, and it means an i10 owner could end up with a brand new car for the equivalent of £300. Or, £25 a month in depreciation…
‘We have learnt some valuable lessons from the 33,000 people who have bought cars from us under the scrappage scheme,’ said MD Tony Whitehorn.
‘They love transparent pricing. They hate haggling. And if they see a good deal they will snap it up. What we are offering post scrappage will build on this experience and will change the way cars are bought in the UK for ever.’
Believe it or not, there’s even more, too. 33,000 car buyers chose a Hyundai under scrappage – and, ingeniously, each one of those will be sent a ‘Friends and Family’ voucher, which will guarantee their pals £250 off any new Hyundai.
Hyundai really is set to stun the UK car industry with its latest offers. What are your reactions to them?

Wow. I’ve already bought two I20s under the existing scrappage scheme, now I could yet be persuaded to buy a third!
Well done to Hyundai for offering its customers quality cars at real value for money prices. Those that disagree have clearly not driven one of the company’s more recent models.
Incidentally I sold my first I20 for a healthy profit, the second I am currently running. And pretty damn good it is too! Not quite the best car in its sector, but I can’t honestly think of anything that offers better value…

This £499 upgrade scheme isn’t actually working – my Hyundai dealer has no stock and when you ring the customer helpline they have no idea who (if anybody) actually has cars available for for the happy returns scheme.
The girl on the helpline said she’d had over 300 unhappy phone calls since Monday (2 days)from hyundai customers who got the offer mailshot and since the current delivery delay is 12 weeks and the scheme has only 5 weeks to run it’s unlikely to be available…

My husband signed up for the scheme a few days ago, it really was only £499, we thought it was a great offer. The salesman at the Hyundai dealer we bought our car from last year said that each dealer only has a certain number of cars allocated so it’s best to get in quick. We will get our new car at the end of the month, the dealer at Morecambe did have a few cars left at the weekend but he said they were being snapped up fast.
We got our i10 on the first day of the scrappage scheme launch last year, James the salesman we dealt with was fantastic, he even lent us his own car when our new one was delayed a few hours.

Called today at Richmond Hyundai, Portsmouth and walked out after 15 minutes having completed “happy returns” offer for £499 and given 8 week delivery date. This is fine as I can run my current i10 for a couple of months more with no loss to me before the new one arrives.
