New Automotive Council
November 12th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
LORD Mandelson has today unveiled a new Government-backed Automotive Council to support industry.
It has been set up to help everyone in the industry look at long-term challenges.
The announcement is proof of the high importance Government is placing on the UK’s car industry, to help future economic growth. Mandelson sees the switch to green motoring as an opportunity for the UK to get a market lead over other countries.
It will be chaired by both Mandelson and ex-Ford chief (and car industry good guy) Richard Parry-Jones. Its aims include:
• Taking forward actions from the NAIGT report
• Developing technology road maps
• Encouraging a strong supply chain
• Directing strategic goals
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said ‘the Automotive Council will be an opportunity for Government and industry to work together on the long term strategic development of the sector.’
In turn, Richard Parry-Jones said he was ‘delighted to co-Chair the Automotive Council and take forward the long term strategic agenda laid out in the NAIGT report.
‘The UK must raise its game to compete for international investment in automotive R&D and manufacturing.
‘To do that, the UK’s car manufacturers need an ever more strategic, collaborative relationship with the Government and to be working with the supply chain and other stakeholders to achieve long term goals.
‘I want the Council to make that happen.’
It will be doing so very soon, too. The first meeting should be held NEXT MONTH. What would YOU like to see the new Automotive Council do?
