Scrappage rationed

January 15th, 2010 by Richard Aucock

government-issues-scrappage-rationsMINISTERS are to allocate quotas to car makers for the final funds from the scrappage cash pot.

Officials say rebates for less than 82,000 cars remains as the scheme enters its final weeks.

The rationing will be based on brand popularity, said business secretary Lord Mandelson. This, he said, will ensure the scheme runs down smoothly.

‘With limited orders as we near the close of scrappage there is a risk of disappointment for car buyers. I would urge people who are still keen on taking part to put their orders in as soon as possible as time is running out.’

Mandelson revealed take=-up has been highest in the South East, who have snared 18 percent of the funds. The East of England have got 12 percent, and both the North West and the South West 11 percent.

‘Industry figures have reflected the success the scheme has already had, boosting both car sales over the past few months and maintaining jobs in car production.

‘We expect the impact of the scheme to continue to be felt into 2010 as deliveries will continue after the scheme closes.’
