Ford share ‘doubles’
FORD won big in September – it not only sold more cars than anyone else, its sales boost was twice the UK average!
Sales for the blue oval were up a massive 22 percent on September 2008.
That equates to 54,500 new Fords being sold during the month – which saw the firm take nearly 16 percent of the UK market. That’s a whole percentage point up on 2008.
Overall, Ford boasts a total year-to-date market share of 17.3 percent.
22,700 of Ford’s registrations since May have been under the scrappage scheme. However, bosses are also keen to point out Fiesta and Kuga sales for the full year have increased compared to last year.
The launch of a brilliant new model helped the Fiesta increase its UK market share from 4.1 percent to 6.1 percent. Compared with 2008, that’s an extra 18,000 sales.
Nigel Sharp, Ford of Britain MD, said ‘as market leader, we expect to do well, but for us to have achieved a sales increase that was twice as big as the overall market growth proves that, once again, the twin strengths of our new and exciting product range and our tremendous dealer network have enabled us to increase our market share.
‘The importance of the government’s scrappage scheme, not least for the automotive supplier base, has been well documented, and we welcome its extension because the underlying level of demand remains weak.
‘In this context, it is gratifying to note that the SMMT have increased their estimate for full year sales for the UK to 1.825 million units (compared with 2.132 million sales in 2008).’
Which is a real fillip for the industry.
