FORD Fiesta buyers have voted the supermini best car of 2009 by buying it in greater numbers than any other new car.

SMMT figures show the Fiesta is way ahead of the rest, with 117,296 sales.

Bosses at Ford are celebrating further too, as the Focus came out in 2nd place overall in the new car sales charts - which were given something of a shakeup in 2009 as the impact of the scrappage scheme was felt.

Scrappage deals accounted for over 1 in 5 new car transactions in 2009.

Small cars featured heavily in the top 10 best-seller list as they were particularly good value under the Government and car maker funded scheme. Significantly, BMW’s premium priced, UK-built MINI was a top 10 best seller, ahead of the junior exec BMW 3 Series.

Despite BMW’s success, though, it was Ford’s dominance that really stood out. Adding to the Fiesta’s 117k sales were 93,517 Focus deals. Next best? The Vauxhall Corsa - with 84,478 sales, then the Vauxhall Astra on 67k units.
