BMW MINI job cuts
February 16th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
850 jobs are to immediately go at MINI’s UK Oxford car plant, due to a plunge in new car sales.
The BMW small car brand conformed the cuts today, following a weekend of speculation.
It is the weekend shift that has been cut, with immediate effect, taking MINI production down from 3 shifts to 2.
The MINI workers affected are agency workers. BMW also announced the entire factory would close until 23 February, to manage stock levels.
However, all permanent workers would be fully paid for the period of the factory closure.
January MINI sales figures were down 35 per cent on the same period in 2008. MINI dealers sold 1638 cars, for a 1.4 per cent markert share, though this is down only 0.1 per cent on 2008.
