F1 data logging at dealers

May 27th, 2010 by Richard Aucock

black-box-for-real-time-always-on-ridesBLACK box recorders that permanently monitor car health could offer dealers a new way of customer contact.

Telematics expert Trimble MRM has developed a black box health recorder that watches vehicle health and service condition – just like F1 teams do.

This is already being used in many large car fleets but the firm says there’s also potential for offering it to private buyers, too.

The benefits to sell to customers include a lack of breakdowns, as they would be prejudged and rectified before gremlins became issues. Fuel economy and CO2 could also be monitored to ensure the car was always running at best efficiency.

Andrew Yeoman, MD of Trimble MRM Europe, said: ‘We’ve already seen how useful ‘Vehicle DNA’ is to our fleet clients but families could also benefit hugely from having it in their cars.

‘The pioneering device sends alerts with information on engine, health, faults and even battery life, improving both fuel economy and of course, the dreaded repair and breakdown costs.

‘Taking the family to the coast for a long weekend is always hampered by the stressful car journeys at either end.

‘Trimble MRM’s latest technology could save time, money and any breakdown possibilities, relieving a great deal of stress and getting the Bank Holiday off to the perfect start.’
