DVLA invades dealers
September 21st, 2010 by Richard Aucock
DVLA teams have removed vehicles on SORN from private properties reports an Exeter newspaper.
This includes cars owned by car dealers – because the cars have not been described as ‘in the hands of a dealer’ with the DVLA.
One car dealer has since asked for compensation for the 6 hours of phone calls and 80-mile round trip he had in order to sort things.
The action by the DVLA has been described as ‘heavy-handed’, report the Exeter Express & Echo.
‘Those in the motor trade say the rule that they must be declared “in trade” is rarely enforced because such cars often have a new owner by the time paperwork is complete.’
The paper’s website carries the full story, which includes several takes of those in the car trade being hit by the DVLA. Some faced £200 clamping fees to release their vehicles…
And if they didn’t pay within seven days, the DVLA said it was within its rights to auction or crush the traders’ cars!
A the paper explained, it all centres around that rule on the V5 where dealers must describe cars as ‘in the trade’. It has rarely been enforced but this might be a signal the DVLA is about to get tough.
If so, the repercussions for the car trade could be huge… what do YOU make of the news?

This is just unbelievable. I think with today’s technology why cant dealers logon on to the DVLA and fill in details off the V5 I.E. Document number and to verify car details to say that the car is with a dealer , This would then give correct information instantly to DVLA/ Police etc stating who has the car if its in the trade.
