Crunch ups home service

TWO-THIRDS of car owners will try to replace their BRAKES themselves, rather than use a car dealer.
And a third will attempt to repair broken gearboxes!
In all, over half of all motorists will attempt home car repairs, in an effort to save cash – with 20 percent of car owners considering the repairs ‘quite major’.
Auto Trader conducted the survey, which should make worrying reading for car dealers and owners alike.
Because 10 per cent of motorists are delaying an MOT beyond its due point, and 7 per cent are delaying road tax, to save money!
‘Shocking’, says Auto Trader director Matt Thompson.
Speaking of the home repairs, he notes that ‘these cars could become unsafe and unroadworthy, and could certainly end up costing the motorist more money in the longer term.’
He shouts up in support of car dealers. ‘A qualified mechanic has spent years learning their skill and how to carry out repair work to a high safety standard.
‘This just simply cannot be matched by a motorist attempting to save costs by doing the job themselves, and could lead to all sorts of problems – both financial implications and safety issues.’
This is backed up by Britannia Rescue, which reports that home repairs are leading to more callouts to stranded motorists…
