Electric car grant is GO!

July 28th, 2010 by Richard Aucock

vauxhall-ampera-copyELECTRIC car sales WILL be incentivised from January 2011 with the confirmation of the key £5k grant.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond has just given the OK to the government grant at SMMT HQ in London.

‘Great news for industry,’ said the SMMT’s Paul Everitt, ‘and a significant commitment by the new government to create UK jobs in the emerging market for ultra-low carbon vehicles.

‘The UK is well placed to exploit the global opportunities in the transition to low carbon technologies and is already making significant progress through R&D, the low carbon supply chain and vehicle manufacturing.

‘The Automotive Council has set some ambitious objectives and today’s announcement is an important step in helping to attract new investment and laying the foundations for thousands of new high-skill jobs.’

Hammond added the grant ‘will ensure that the UK is a world leader in low emission vehicles.’

It’s great news for the fledgling EV car industry, and will really help incentivise models such as the Nissan LEAF, along with forthcoming electric cars from Renault and Vauxhall.

If your brand is planning to sell electric cars, how do you think the grant will incentivise their take-up?

Full details of the grant
From next year, motorists will be entitled to a ‘Plug-In Car Grant’ of up to £5,000* (or 25 percent of the list price) when buying an electric, plug-in hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell car, providing it meets safety, reliability, performance and warranty standards set by the Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV) in consultation with industry.
