Makers welcome scrap
September 28th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
CAR makers have praised the Government’s decision to extend the scrappage scheme by 100,000 cars.
Nissan has been a key proponent of the scheme – and has responded to Lord Mandelson’s announcement with its own extension.
The firm’s ‘Trade-In’ offer, which sees scrappage extended to cars aged 8-10 years, will also be carried through with the extended scheme.
Any Nissan built at Sunderland – the Micra, Note, Qashqai or Qashqai+2, will be covered by the Trade-In initiative.
Nissan’s UK MD, Paul Willcox said ‘there’s no doubt the scrappage scheme along with our own Trade-in deal has given, and will continue to give the UK car industry a boost.
‘We’re delighted that both incentives can carry on. Best of all, the Nissan Trade-in offer encourages people to buy British, providing vital support for the UK manufacturing industry.’
Volvo has also welcomed the decision. Thus far, 4220 Volvos have been sold under scrappage – more than 2000 of which have been the Volvo C30.
The V50 has also sold 875 units under scrappage – which is why the brand ‘welcomes today’s announcement from Lord Mandelson.’
