Car firms praise review
July 28th, 2009 by Richard Aucock
GOVERNMENT plans to investigate motoring tax and charges have been welcomed by industry body the SMMT.
Ministers have stipulated that any future environmental taxes must be both clear and consistent – something warmly welcomed by the car makers.
In eight years, says the SMMT, cars reduced CO2 emissions by 20 percent. In the future, CO2 emisisons will plunge further…
… which means less money for the Government from tax!
The SMMT has thus deamded that tax regimes are not constantly readjusted to make up the difference – warning that trust in the Government will disappear if they are.
‘Government must work with industry and other stakeholders openly on a new consistent and transparent long term model for motoring taxation, that is fair and helps industry to deliver low-carbon targets,’ said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.
‘Any change to policy must reconcile revenue, environmental and UK industrial goals, while achieving buy-in and trust from the consumer.’
