Budget will be March 24
GOVERNMENT chiefs have announced the 2010 Budget will be held on Wednesday 24 March.
Confirmation from Chancellor Alistair Darling has got immediate response from the SMMT.
In a pre-Budget submission, the SMMT called upon the Government to support long term investment for car makers and car dealers.
However, as the scrappage scheme ends, chief Paul Everitt has also demanded measures to boost consumer confidence if the recovery is to be sustained and strengthened.
‘Government has recognised the importance of manufacturing and has signaled its commitment to working collaboratively with industry,’ he said.
‘The scrappage scheme has been a lifeline for the new car market, but further measures are now necessary to build confidence and encourage new investment.
‘Budgetary measures that support the Automotive, Supply Chain and Technology Councils’ plans will help to signal a long-term commitment to manufacturing that will in turn boost business confidence and the attractiveness of the UK to inward investors.’
Everitt’s calls come with a warning: there are expected to be almost 200,000 fewer new car registrations in 2010…
