Bangers4BEN man relaxed
BANGERS4BEN entrant ToyotaPR has set up a blog to trace his thoughts – live from the event itself.
The latest update came, unsurprisingly, at 1am this morning, after dinner and a nightcap in the bar. Why so late? Well, Scott Brownlee and his stepson Christian had taken 12 hours to get there…
Why so long? ‘the scenic route via central Glasgow (a mistake)’, he said, plus another detour around the Loch Lomond road. In all though, ‘that is not too bad a time to do 580 miles.’
The car? A Toyota Carina E, of 15 years’ and 151,000 miles’ vintage. It ‘cruised up the motorway as fast as we wanted and belted through the Highland roads with nothing to alarm except perhaps the fear of old suspension on budget tyres and damp roads.’
Sure, admitted Scott, new cars are safer, more lavishly equipped, have air con and in-car entertainment. The Carina E’s headlights ‘are a bit dimmer and the brakes less powerful, but in terms of comfort, quietness and pace we were little worse off than if we had been in my wife’s Prius.’
Generally a positive view from our Toyota man, then – not bad for a £100 motor he bought off one of the mechanics down at Toyota HQ.
‘Of course, my view might change if we get a mechanical problem that strands us miles from anywhere in the wind and rain.’
We’ll be following his Bangers4BEN updates throughout the event. You can do the same, at the special Car4BEN blog.
