Bangers4BEN day 2: Pictures
BANGERS4BEN has today suffered its first mechanical problems, as the challenge of Scotland’s hills arrives.
Most alarming is the loss of brakes by team Smart Repair.
Their Renault Scenic really impressed us at the start line, but has developed a bit of a gremlin along the way. Nothing that team GRS and team Poole Audi couldn’t sort, though.
That wasn’t the end of the dramas, mind. It seems Poole Audi then spotted, err, a pool of coolant beneath their car – oh no!
Fear not. They’re car dealers. They were back on the road in minutes – thanks to ‘sealant, knife and jubilee clip’. Shame they weren’t able to fully top up the coolant, having earlier helped out yet another fellow competitor with their reserves…
Elsewhere, team Bangernomics is struggling with the hills, despite the Rover Sterling’s ‘monster’ power – ‘getting the 800 up hills is like getting my granddad upstairs’, they reported back.
At least it’s plain sailing for team Toyota PR. Their chief concern? Sweets. Seems it’s Werther’s Originals for the trip up to John O’Groats, and mint humbugs for the run back. That’s Japanese reliability for you.
The teams are scheduled to be in John O’Groats by early afternoon. We’re remaining on tenterhooks back here at base, to see if everyone does actually make it.
Come back later for a progress update…
Richard
P.S. Word from the ground is that team Hyundai have changed from yesterday’s genius wedding car theme. We await first images with interest!
