Aug sales analysis top 10

September 4th, 2009 by Richard Aucock

august-sales-analysis-the-top-10NEW car sales in August were forecast to decline 6 percent… instead, they have RISEN 6 percent!

The turnaround, says the SMMT, is entirely down to the new car scrappage scheme.

Most significant was an increase in retail sales of over HALF – which, again, is thanks to the Government’s new car scrap scheme. It’s accounted for 1 in 4 sales.

Because of this, the best-performing segments remain the city car and supermini sectors. City cars, indeed, were up a staggering 252 percent!

Supermini sales rose by 16.9 percent.

Surprisingly, previously unpopular sports and SUV sectors also increased, by 25.8 percent and 10.1 percent respectively.

But it’s the amazing performance of Hyundai that continues to wow the industry. It’s now behind only the Fords Focus and Fiesta in the OVERALL sales charts – and is actually TOP for overall retail sales. Peugeot, BMW and Toyota will also be pleased with their August performance.

Let’s not get too carried away though, warns the SMMT. August sales were still down 15 percent from the average recorded between 1999 and 2008.

Total new car sales thus far in 2009 are also still down by 21.5 percent. That’s 315,014 fewer cars…
